Course Content

The course provides instruction in practical and theoretical aspects of gardening. It is based in the National Botanic Garden of Wales, which provides excellent practical facilities and gives students the opportunity to work alongside experienced horticulturalists and botanists. It is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in horticulture as well as for experienced gardeners wishing to gain a formal qualification. The achievement of any combination of five units leads to the award.

Certificates are issued for successful completion of each unit

Students have the option to undertake a Practical Gardening unit
Career Prospects and Progression

Employers accept City and Guilds Certificates as a sign of competence. Local employment includes garden centres, plant nurseries, contract maintenance, National Trust, botanic gardens, parks department, self employment. This qualification leads to further education courses: RHS General Certificate or Advanced National Certificate Horticulture (Technical Certificate).

Modules

Subjects studied will include five of the following:- Soils and fertilisers, plant science, pest and disease control, growing better plants, organic gardening, garden design, constructing garden features, growing flowers, vegetables and salads, growing fruit, trees, shrubs and roses, rock and water gardens, the garden nature reserve, propagating plants, indoor and greenhouse plants, garden history, the lawn, garden machinery, flower decor.

Method of Assessment

Short answer written tests of 18 questions set by City and Guilds for each of the five chosen subjects. The certificate is awarded on achievement of 5 units.
