Course Description:
So you want to be a Vehicle Service Technician?

What is the job?

Working individually within a team servicing and repairing:

  • Light vehicles - cars, vans
  • Heavy vehicles - trucks and buses


The work of a Vehicle Technician includes:

  • Routine servicing and tuning
  • Replacing worn components and units
  • Using specialist equipment to measure performance and make adjustments
  • Diagnosing and locating electrical/electronic faults
  • Servicing fuel injection equipment
  • Carrying out road tests
  • Fitting accessories
  • Overhauling and reconditioning components

Programme Content Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2 (Light and Heavy)
The qualification results from achievement of 7 mandatory units plus 1 option.

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 3 (Light and Heavy)
The programme is normally completed in 1 year, dependant on entry qualifications. The qualification results from achievement of 6 mandatory units and 1 option.

Assessment and Progression:
The qualification at both Level 2 and 3 results from the completion of a portfolio of evidence which includes:

  • Underpinning Knowledge, C & G 4101 Automotive Qualifications. Gola exams are used which result in separate certification.

  • Evidence of Practical Competence in the Workplace
