The course is designed to enhance your relationships and for you to learn basic counselling skills and theories rather than for training to become a counsellor. The training does not give you a professional qualification as a counsellor. It will introduce you to the use of counselling skills, which can then be applied in a wide variety of contexts. You will be expected to draw from your own experiences, both professionally and personally. Aims of the course

• To enable you to understand the essentials of counselling skills as opposed to other helping strategies

• To increase self-awareness and an understanding of how this influences your relationships

• To assist you in developing your own counselling skills
.
• To enable you to demonstrate the application of the skills that you have learnt
.
• To enable you to understand some of the basic theoretical concepts used in counselling
. Please note that there is a minimum age requirement of 25 years for this course.

Course Content:
The course has been designed as an introduction to person-centred counselling, and includes topics such as:
• What is counselling
?
• Ethics
• Professional career development
• Confidentiality
• Self-awareness
• Managing silence
• Empathy

Awarding body:
Open College Network (OCN).

Entry Requirements:
There is a minimum age requirement of 25 years. Applicants must be willing to be self-reflective and participate in group work.

Entry Process:
There is no interview required.

Assessment:
Assessment is continuous thoughout the course.

Progression Routes:
Successful students may progress to the Colleges Further Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory course.
