  • : To investigate some of the counselling methods and their use in context, with particular emphasis on person-centred counselling.

    Course Content:
    The course comprises the following four elements: Personal development This will include:
  • Self-awareness and self-evaluation
  • Values, beliefs and personal boundaries
  • Trust and confidentiality
  • Empathy
  • Sharing
  • Disclosure
  • Managing change
  • Taking personal responsibility
Assessment for this element is based on a personal journal charting your progress/process on the course. Counselling theory The main emphasis in this element will be on non-directive, person-centred counselling with particular reference to Carl Rogers. At least one other Humanistic Counselling model will be studied. Concepts to be explored include:
  • Counselling relationships
  • Client
  • /Counsellor responsibility
  • Self-actualising and positive change
Assessment for this element is based on a research project focusing on an area of counselling that is of particular interest to you, which you will be required to present to the group. Extracts from your personal journal will also be assessed. Skills and theories in application Counselling has ethical implications. You will be encouraged to develop a personal code of conduct and to consider the following:
  • Contracting
  • Confidentiality
  • Record-keeping
  • Conflicts in loyalties and values
  • Implications of personal and social relationships with clients
  • Power in counselling
  • Dependency
  • Boundaries
Assessment for this element is based on a case study of approximately 2,000 words that provides evidence of learned skills used in an applied situation. In order to achieve this you will need to demonstrate and evaluate your counselling skills over three sessions with a client. Counselling skills in practice In this element students will need to demonstrate an understanding of counselling as a process, which may include working through several stages. You will use a variety of skills:
  • Challenging
  • Empathic understanding
  • Immediacy
  • Self-disclosure
  • Goal-setting
  • Problem analysis
  • Decision-making
  • Confrontation
  • Other skills associated with person-centred counselling
Assessment for this element is based on an evaluation of your practical counselling skills written by your tutor, and five feedback sheets (one completed by your tutor, one by yourself, and three by your peers).

Candidates enrolling on the course will have had a minimum of 36 hours certificated counselling training. There is a minimum age requirement of 25 years. Acceptance onto the course is subject to a successful interview with the course tutor.
