Course Description
This is a Diploma course which will lead to successful students being able to practice as counsellors within an agency setting. Students will study a mixture of skills and theory of counselling and self awareness and development work. Units covered:
* Working ethically and safely as an agency counsellor
* Working within a counselling relationship
* Working with client diversity
* Working within a user-centred agency approach
* Working with self awareness in the counselling process
* Working within a framework of counselling theory and skills
* Working self reflectively as an agency counsellor

How is the Qualification Achieved ?
The course is assessed through a portfolio of written work and observations. There will also be a tape recorded assessment of your proficiency in using counselling skills and an exam based on observing a recorded counselling session.

On Successful Completion of this Course
Students who have successfully achieved the Diploma will be qualified to work as agency counsellors. They will have covered enough training hours to meet the requirements of BACP accreditation. Students may go on to study at postgraduate level or to work towards one of CPCAB's higher level qualifications.

Additional Information
Students will need to complete 100 hours minimum of formally contracted, supervised counselling in Agency settings (can include telephone and on-line counselling if formally-contracted). Trainees are normally voluntary staff members of their Agency. This is over two year duration of the course. Students are responsible for setting up and financing their own supervision, and for finding and arranging their own work placement, although help will be available.

Students are also required to have completed 10 hours of their own personal counselling during the course, preferably in the second year. Again, organising and financing this is the student's responsibility.
