Course Overview This is a mixed ability course where beginners and new learners are welcome each term. By the end of the course you will be able to design, plan and implement a project in clay of your choice. You will develop a variety of hand building and decorative techniques, including the use of the potter's wheel. New learners welcome each term and those who wish to increase their knowledge and appreciation of pottery. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: Essential - sketch book/notebook, old shirt/apron, pencil, masking tape. Optional - clay tools, tin of collected items (cotton reels, screws buttons, etc)
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: Learners will explore clay as a creative material, through a number of small projects. The course is designed over three terms and new learners are welcome each term. Tuition is on a one-to-one basis but the learners will also be aided in their work through group discussion as well as observing other learners' projects develop. Students expand their knowledge by being introduced to a range of techniques, clays and materials. Learners are encouraged to become confident and comfortable in one or more areas explored in class. Demonstrations on techniques, methods and glazing styles are given throughout the course.
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be monitored though observation, peer and lecturer feedback.
Progression: As this is course is learner/ project driven, learners can continue to improve their knowledge and technique on this course. Following on from this they could enrol on more specialist and/or qualification courses eg Glazing Course at Reading University.
Homework: Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from undertaking home study.
Additional Costs: This is a 'Pay as you Clay' course and learners will pay for the clay they use.
Course Fees
- Fees quoted with the course information are for the current academic year. Fees for the next academic year starting in September are subject to change and will be confirmed annually.
- Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.
