About this course

Who is the programme for? This honours degree is designed for people with enquiring minds and a background in the humanities, social sciences, media or the arts.

What will I study? You will study a range of core modules which include: Modernity and the City Research Methods Cultural Theory (looking at Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Feminism, Structuralism, and Post-Modernism). These are supplemented by a range of options selected from the following fields: Language, Politics and Society Literature, Art and Modernity Popular Culture and Media Philosophy, Religion and Ethics Turbulent Texts (Abject Voices and Cultures of Desire). In addition, students will be able to gain practical experience in the use of media technologies.

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? Assessment is continuous and includes essays, reports, seminar presentations and exams. In the final year students will undertake a dissertation or project on a topic chosen in consultation with their tutor.

Future prospects? Nationally, Cultural Studies degrees have a good track record for graduate employment in a wide variety of careers including teaching, journalism, tourism, the arts, media and communications, advertising, museums and galleries and post-graduate research.

When will the programme start? The programme will start in September 2010

How long will it take? The full time route will take 3 years, with 2 semesters of 15 weeks per year. Five modules each semester will be studied and the route requires attendance of 15 hours class time each week. The part-time route will take up to 5 years, studying on an infill basis.

What about the Money? St Helens College is committed to providing value for money higher education programmes, therefore programme fees for Honours Degrees and Foundation Degrees for 2010/11 will be 2,100* per year for full time programmes.
