About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C and be able to show evidence of an enthusiasm for Drama and English. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Course Content

The Drama element of the Course allows students to develop themselves as people and to strengthen their Life Skills. In the Theatre Studies element, students study the work of some of the leading theatrical practitioners, and an appreciation of plays from the actors', directors' and audiences' points-of- view. Students will also be encouraged to develop skills in critical analysis and will study critical responses to live theatrical performances.

Course Features

The Course allows students to enjoy studying a subject which is relevant to their own lives and experiences.

The Course enables students to research a subject and find to more about it through personal investigation.

The Course is active, practical, thought-provoking and, above all, enjoyable.

The Course allows students the opportunity to carry out practical work in a realistic environment as well as classwork.

The Course help place students' skills within the context of World Theatre through the study of plays, their interpretation and the means of bringing them alive from the page to the stage.

The Course follows a programme of study which involves : progression to both Higher Education and Employment; develops Key Skills ; and allows students to gain confidence through independent learnimng skills.

The Course adds a Welsh dimension by the study or performance of Anglo-Welsh playwrights through practical work in English.

The Course helps students gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to succeed in a whole range of activities.
Career Prospects and Progression

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas. There are a number of careers directly related to Drama including Actor, Stage Manager, Arts Administrator, Drama Teacher, Drama Therapist or Arts' Production jobs. Other careers where the skills developed through drama might be useful would include Community Work, Journalism or Creative Writing, Marketing and Sales or Media.

AS DA1 PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP in either acting or technical skills. DA2 TEXT IN PERFORMANCE A2 DA3 PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE ON A SET THEME DA4 TEXT IN CONTEXT

Method of Assessment

AS Level A performance workshop; and a written paper on two set texts in performance as well as a live theatre written review. A2 Level A practical performance on a set theme; and a written paper on two set texts in performance as well as an unseen Directorial analysis.
