Who is the programme for? This programme is for practitioners who are interested in increasing their vocational qualifications, and who are currently employed in the early years sector, or similar, such as nursery nurses, learning support assistants, learning mentors, teachers etc.

What will I study? This Foundation Degree has been designed in consultation with local and regional employers and gives students the opportunity to develop their academic knowledge, practical, technical, analytical, transferable and work based skills. The programme is divided into two levels, Foundation Level and Intermediate Level. There are a number of modules to be completed at each level which all have a credit rating. Students need to achieve 240 credits to achieve the qualification. Foundation Level Modules include - Year One - Principles of Academic and Professional Study; Assessing Young Children's Needs; Professional Practice 1 (Reflective Practitioner); How Young Children Learn. Year 2 - Early Childhood Development; Application and Practice of Early Childhood Development. Intermediate Level (Year 2) Modules include -safeguarding children; Professional Practice 2 (Working Practices) Intermediate Level (Year 3) Modules include -Work-based Project; Early years Legislative Framework; Professional Practice 3. Students also have the opportunity to study a Senior Practitioner Module in either Foundation Stage, Playwork or Early Years.
Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? There are a number of assessment methods, including assignments and presentations. In addition there will be one "timed" written paper.

Future prospects? The programme will provide a platform for employment progression ,as well as giving the opportunity to study the BA (Hons) in Early Years top-up. This is currently via the University of Huddersfield, although it is hoped that this will be available at St Helens College in the future. The qualification will also contribute to the recognition of Early Years Practitioner Status, as required by the Children's Workforce Development Council.

When will the programme start? The programme will start in September 2010.

How long will it take? This is a part time course requiring attendance of one evening per week over a period of three years.

What about the Money? St Helens College is committed to providing value for money higher education programmes, therefore programme fees for Honours Degrees and Foundation Degrees for 2010/11 will be 2,100* per year for full time programmes.
