EDI Level 1 Retail Introduction Certificate
This vocationally-related qualification introduces the underpinning knowledge and understanding needed to work within a retail environment. The programme is also designed to build the students confidence, enabling progression into higher learner programmes. The course is work-based, with a tutor visiting the student in the workplace to provide support and guidance. The course, including tutor support and learning material, is fully funded.

Course Content:
The course has five mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 Introducing the retail industry

In this unit, students will gain an understanding of the different places where people shop and consider why different shopping locations have developed. They will also identify the range of services that retailing outlets provide. People like to shop in many different ways, according to their specific needs. In this unit, you will explore different retailing styles. A customers rights are protected by many regulations; you will gain knowledge of these laws and how they govern you and your customer.

  • Unit 2 Help maintain health, safety and security in a retail environment

In this unit, students will learn about their responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace and gain an understanding of the laws which govern health and safety. This unit will provide knowledge of hazard identification and enables students to implement procedures that reduce potential risks. Students will be introduced to techniques that promote the safe lifting and handling of items. Students will also learn about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in the workplace, as well as the necessity to contribute to maintaining the security of people, stock and premises, and will learn how this may be accomplished.

  • Unit 3 Assist with product display to encourage sales

In this unit, students will learn about why retail outlets need to keep displays and shelves adequately stocked in order to maintain high levels of sales. They will gain an understanding of how to unpack and store retail products ready for displaying and merchandising them in order to gain maximum sales. Students will also look at how retail outlets encourage customers to buy items at certain times of the year, using annual plans, which are based on seasonal sales, special promotions and other specific occasions. To ensure that stock levels are maintained, students will learn how to assist with stock control methods used by different retailers, such as check stock requirements, check quality of products on delivery and how to replenish items using techniques like stock rotation.

  • Unit 4 Contribute to maintenance of good customer care

In this unit, students will learn that good customer service is an essential role for a retail employee. Students will learn the importance of communicating appropriately and effectively with customers to provide an efficient service. They will also learn why it is important to dress and behave in a manner which creates a positive impression for both themselves and the retail outlet. Students will gain knowledge of how to wrap and pack a range of retail items to avoid damage to the goods and to aid presentation.

  • Unit 5 Work effectively in a retail team

In this unit, students will develop an understanding of the job opportunities available to them within the retail industry. They will gain knowledge of how an organisations procedures affect their job role. Students will learn about why it is important to communicate effectively in the workplace, gaining understanding of the methods of communication appropriate for managers and colleagues, thus developing the interpersonal skills required for the workplace. They will also find out how they can develop essential teamworking skills.
