Course Overview By the end of the course, learners will be able to use English at a high level of competence for professional or study purposes.

Qualification gained: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - examination in June 2009. (Mock examination in February 2009).

Course Content: The Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English is designed to provide a high-level qualification and is recognised for entry to the majority of British Universities. The course closely follows the syllabus for the exam but the range of real-world tasks ensures that the learners benefit from the topics covered and skills developed, whether they take the exam or not. They will, for example, work on techniques for giving presentations, writing proposals and proof-reading documents as well as discussing issues of current or cultural interest. There will be frequent use of pair work and role-play as well as individual and whole-class activities to encourage the broad development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Grammar will be reviewed as necessary and more advanced points introduced and practised. Learners will continually work on enriching their vocabulary with particular emphasis on the appropriate use of formal and informal language. They will produce a variety of written work ranging from letters to articles, reports and information leaflets. Speaking remains a priority and fluency, accuracy and good pronunciation will be encouraged throughout the course.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be monitored throughout using peer and tutor feedback or class contributions as well as more formal tasks in written and spoken English. Success in the Mock Exam at the beginning of February is a requirement for CAE entry. The final examination in June consists of 5 papers: Reading, Writing, English in Use, Listening and Speaking. The Speaking test is held on a separate day.

Progression: This is the highest level EFL course offered at Newbury College. Progression from this class is to a native speaker GCSE or A-level class, employment or university.

Homework: Regular twice-weekly homework is essential and learners will benefit from undertaking home study of approximately 4 hours per week - although not in itself contributing to the final examination mark.

Additional Costs: Learners will need to buy a course book (approx. 20) and this will be discussed at the first class, a book of practice exam papers (approx. 13) and an advanced learners' dictionary. The examination fee is included in the course fees.
