Course Summary:
Any Environmental Health Assistant or Technician who wishes to develop their career in Food Premises Inspection, must, according to the current Food Standard Agency Code of Practice, be in possession of an Ordinary or Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection awarded by the Environmental Health Registration Board. This course is designed to prepare you for the examinations for this Higher Certificate.

Course Details:
You will study four taught units at Nescot as the first part of this qualification. Once these have been successfully completed, you will then be required to pass a professional interview with examiners from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and to complete a logbook of relevant field practice. This normally takes at least one further year.

Career Progression:
Students successfully completing the full qualification will become EHRB-qualified Inspectors, allowing them to carry out inspection of Food Premises.

Students wishing to advance their career further may be able to use either the full qualification or the academic part of the qualification for credit exemption or advanced entry to degree courses which lead to Environmental Health Officer status.

Other Information:

Additional information for applicants not working for a Local Authority Environmental Health Department
Please be aware that the course offered at Nescot is the academic component of the route to becoming an Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB)-qualified Inspector. You will need to register independently with the EHRB (cost approx 300) and once you have passed your four academic units at Nescot, we will send your name to them. After this, Nescot has no further involvement in your qualification.

The CIEH will invite you for an interview and you then have to complete a logbook of inspections. These inspections must be signed off by a qualified Environmental Health Officer, thus requiring you to either gain employment in an appropriate department or to independently arrange to accompany a qualified EHO on such inspections. On successful completion of the logbook you will become eligible to receive a certificate from the EHRB stating your qualification to carry out inspections.

Requirement
Applicants for this course should be employed and supported by a Local Authority Environmental Health Department, and would normally be expected to have a Basic and/or Intermediate Certificate in Food Hygiene. In exceptional circumstances, applicants not in such employment but with significant experience in catering or food manufacture and holding an Intermediate Certificate in Food Hygiene may also be considered. Such applicants should read carefully the additional information section of this course sheet.
