PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This is a one year course.
GCSE English develops all four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are assessed by a coursework folder and oral assessment worth 40% of total marks and two examinations taken in June. These are based on an anthology of poetry and on media texts. The coursework folder comprises writing on a Shakespeare play, modern short stories and two pieces of personal writing. Students have to demonstrate their speaking skills in a range of contexts. There is a strong emphasis on reading and discussing literature on this course. The course is designed to build writing competence and develop analytical skills.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
A grade C or better in GCSE English is a key qualification for employment and for further studies at Level 3 or above.
