GCSE SCIENCE

Is this course right for me?

The new GCSE specification is split into two units, both containing a module of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

What will I be learning?

This course is suitable for anyone interested in Science and wanting a broad-based qualification covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

It is acceptable as a ?Science GCSE? for those wishing to train as a teacher and provides scientific background for courses such as Sport Science.

Biology topics include: Diet, Health, Genetics and the Environment. Chemistry includes: Fuels, Plastics, Cooking and Reaction Rates. Physics covers topics such as The Big Bang; Energy Resources and Communication.

Many of these topics are environmentally, economically and politically important and studying them will help you understand reports in the media, as well as everyday experiences. You will also learn to interpret tables and graphs and analyse written reports.

How will I learn?

You will learn from a mixture of class lectures, individual and group research and practical work.

You will be set regular homework and set tests so we can monitor your progress and you can prepare for the examinations. Completion of set work and full attendance are essential if you are to achieve a good grade.

What else might I want to know?

The qualification will provide some under-pinning knowledge for anyone wanting to progress to a higher, science-based course. The content overlaps with that of GCSE Biology, so the two can not be taken at the same time.

You could study GCSE Environmental Science with this qualification.

There will be two externally set examinations, each covering 3 modules. You may be able to take the first of these in January. Exams are set at Foundation or Higher Level.

The coursework has two components; short practical tasks that are carried out and assessed in class and a report on ?Science in the News? the topic is set by the examination board, individually researched and written up in class.

You will need to buy a text book for each of 3 subjects and may with to buy work books to help you prepare for the examinations.

You will also need a calculator.

What can I do afterwards?

You could progress to a higher level course such as A Levels or a National Diploma.
