PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
What can I expect on the course?
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a specialist vocational course. The qualification will provide you with a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the Building Services sector. The HNC is nationally recognised by employers allowing progression directly into employment or onto a Degree.

The course is a practitioner (skills-based) course based on core areas that analyse the building energy requirement in terms
of the external environment and internal space and the effect of the built environment on energy resources. It considers the principles and analysis of associated building engineering systems, leading to the understanding of control, simulation and modelling techniques.

How is the course structured?
The course is made up of ten units six core units, which everyone takes, and four specialist units. The specialist units
enable you to study particular areas in depth. At least five of the ten units you select must be at (H2) level (see What
subjects will I study?).

How will I be assessed?
Each unit is internally assessed and graded by lecturers. Grades awarded are pass, merit or distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification.

What subjects will I study?
You will study these six core units:
Analytical Methods (H1)
Design Principles and Applications (H1)
Group Project (H2)
Health, Safety and Welfare (H2)
Management Principles and Applications (H2)
Service Science (H1)

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
Air Conditioning A (H1)
Building Management Systems (H2)
Electricity and Lighting (H1)
Energy Utilisation and Efficiency (H2)
Engineering Mathematics (H2)#
Heating (H1)
Heating B (H2)
Piped Distribution Services (H1)
Quality Assurance and Control (H2)#
Services Project Management (H2)#
Thermofluids and Acoustic Criteria (H2)

# You need to select one unit of these.

* These two units have a value of half, and should be taken together to make one unit.

NB: Not all unit options are available and are subject to change
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
What are the career opportunities?
This qualification is highly regarded by the Building Services industry and can open doors to careers with design consultants and contractors, where you could be working on major building
projects around the world or helping to run a wide variety of buildings, from hospitals to banking headquarters.
You will be shown how to design a wide range of services such as heating, air conditioning, lighting and fire fighting
systems, all with an emphasis on health, safety and the environment.
