The BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector with national recognition by employers allowing progression direct into employment or to degree.
What will I learn?
The course is made up of ten units - five core units, which everyone takes, and five specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth, and there is opportunity to follow a clear specialist pathway recognised in the following endorsed qualification titles: BTEC HNC in Electrical / Electronic Engineering BTEC HNC in Electrical / Electronic Engineering (Electrical) What subjects will I study? All students take these five core units: Business Management Techniques (H1); Engineering Science (H1); Analytical Methods for Engineers (H1); Project (H2); Electrical and Electronic Principles (H2) You take five specialist units from the following list. Engineering Design (H2); Digital and Analogue Devices and Circuits (H2); Electronics (H2); Instrumentation and Control Principles (H1); Microprocessor Systems (H1) (For E&E ONLY); Electrical Power (H1) (For Electrical ONLY) {subject to course approval} The course presents a varied profile of achievement that is considered as CPD for a range of professional qualifications in the work sector.
How will I be assessed?
Each unit is internally assessed and graded by lecturers. Unit grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification. There is a mix of continuous assessment, such as assignment work, workbooks and formal test papers used to assess progress on this course.
What can I do after the course?
The course leads to the possibility of entry to most Universities on a relevant Degree course. The course prepares you for a range of employment in the public and private sectors in industries such as Electronic Design Engineering, Electronic Manufacturing.
