Course summary: Whether you wish to develop skills in interior design for your own home use. or wish to consider pursuing an interior design career, this course provides a useful and inspiring "taster" experience. Interior desin is part of our everyday lives and this course is about developing your visual and special awareness in order to understand and appreciate the processes and techniques used by an interior designer. You will be introduced to research methods and the processes involved in developing and realising design ideas. The course will develop your awareness of colour,line,,texture and balance and provide you with a range of opportunities to develop your own skills in applying these basic principles of the design process. This course will give you the experience to progress onto the Advanced Interior Design course (B10662)

Course aims:
This is an exciting course that will introduce you to the basic skills of Interior Design. You will be exploring was to plan and design living spaces and communicate your ideas through different approaches to drawing, both technical and freehand.
Please note: while an ability to draw freehand is not a prerequisite for being accepted on the course, you will be required to explore different ways of drawing and model making to communicate your design ideas. The course does not solely focus on fabrics and decoration, but there are elements of this within each project. Throughout the course you are building a portfolio of design work which you will have the opportunity to exhibit at the end of the year.

Course content:
The course is structured so you will undertake level 1 for the first 15 weeks. During this time you will be introduced to the basic skills required to progress onto the next level.
Upon successful completion of the level 1 you will be able to progress onto level 2 where you will produce full design packages.
The course focuses on domestic interior design, providing a taster experience, while completing set projects.
You will be introduced to research methods and the process involved in developing and realising design ideas.
The course will develop your awareness of colour, line, texture, balance, model making and different drawing styles. You will be working both 2dimentionally and 3dimentionally to produce a portfolio.
Classes are will include front led teaching and student independent study with help and guidance from the tutor.
The NCFE comprises of three units:
Level 1:
  • Explore available resources to develop basic craft skills
  • Explore and develop ideas creatively
  • Create, present and review final craft item(s)

Level 2:
  • Use materials and resources to develop techniques
  • Develop and adapt ideas creatively
  • Create, present and evaluate final craft item(s)


Facilities for students:
  • Studio work space
  • Drawing Boards
  • Use of the college library (Learning resource Centre)


Tutors:
Samm Rushforth is a qualified Interior Designer who has worked within the industry.
Samm has also has worked as a Set Designer for local theatres and as a large scale Model Builder. Further to this she also teaches Interior Design and 3-Dimentional Design at another institute of further education.

Assessment:
  • The course is pass or fail
  • Verbal and written feedback is provided
  • Self assessment and evaluation

Interview for entry: Interview required

Interview preparation:
  • Interview is required upon application.
  • Students will be required to state why they want to do the course and what they hope to achieve.

Progression and links:
This course will provide you withe the experience required to progress onto the Advanced Interior Design course (B10662)
Alternatively this course alone will not guarantee progression into higher education, but the qualification will aid students wanting to apply for HE or Interior Design jobs.
Successful previous students have gone on to study:
University of Brighton, Interior Architecture BA(hons), Northbrook, HND Spatial Design, London Metropole, Interior Design BA(hons) and others have gained entry onto Interior design course in Germany, Poland and Spain.

Work experience opportunities:
Time is not allocated for work experience, but students wishing to peruse a career with in interior design are encouraged to gain work experience.
Previous students have gained experience as the Designers Guild and for small local interior designers.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 356.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
