Course aims:
This advanced course is designed to develop previous interior design skills, for both commercial and domestic spaces. The course will further develop your visual communication skills, design skills and drawing skills (both technical and freehand). In addition the course will include model making as a means of communicating your designs. (Please note this course does not solely focus on fabrics and decoration, but there are elements of this within each project). Through out the course you are building a portfolio of design work, to a professional standard, which you will have the opportunity to exhibit at the end of the year.
  • Provide an experience of Interior Design that is rigorous and challenging.
  • Explore a range of resources to develop skills
  • Explore and develop ideas creatively
  • Create, present, review and evaluate final work
  • Aid the personal development of students within a Design discipline, employment, or, areas of study other than Art and Design.
  • Develop students visual and conceptual awareness, skills of investigation, research, analysis, evaluation and critical judgement.
  • Promote a working ethos that enhances self-motivation and commitment.
  • Develop communication skills, orally, visually and in a written format.
  • Ensure students understanding responding to a commercial brief.


Course content:
The course focuses on developing existing skills and knowledge of interior design. You will build on your knowledge of how a 3dimentional space can be enhanced through the designed application and placement of visual elements such as colour, materials and artefacts.
You will be introduced to a range of different working methods, great emphasis is placed in drawing development and 3D model making in the first term. You will build knowledge of historical and contemporary designers and architects. You will follow the design cycle to answer realistic commercial briefs.
Classes are will include front led teaching and student independent study with help and guidance from the tutor.
The NCFE comprises of three units:
  • Respond to a commercial craft brief
  • Analyse, investigate and experiment with ideas
  • Execute, present and critically evaluate final craft work

  • Access to the 3D workshop, for model making
  • Use of the college library (Learning resource Centre)


Tutors:
Samm Rushforth is a qualified Interior Designer who has worked within the industry. Samm has also has worked as a Set Designer for local theatres and as a large scale Model Builder. Further to this she also teaches Interior Design and 3-Dimentional Design at another institute of further education.

Assessment:
  • The course is pass or fail
  • Verbal and written feedback is provided
  • Self assessment and evaluation

Entry Requirements:

Progression and links:
Course could provide experience to progress onto Higher Education courses. Successful previous students have gone on to study:
University of Brighton, Interior Architecture BA(hons), Northbrook, HND Spatial Design, London Metropole, Interior Design BA(hons), Interior Design diploma at KLC. Other students have gained entry onto Interior design course in Germany, Poland and Spain.
A number of students have gone freelance and set up their own interior design consultancies.

Work experience opportunities:
Time is not allocated for work experience, but students wishing to peruse a career with in interior design are encouraged to gain work experience.
Previous students have gained experience as the Designers Guild and for small local interior designers.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 356.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
