Course aims:
Do you want to have a career as a hairdresser? Do you wish to gain the skills required to be able to apply confidently for hairdressing jobs?
This is a vocational course that will prepare you for a career in the exciting industry of Hairdressing, as well as developing important skills such as communication skills and teamwork.
A VTCT NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing is an industry recognised qualification that is valued by employers, and is also seen as a route onto the NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing. This programme builds on the skills achieved at Level 1 to a higher professional standard that will meet the needs of the employer.
During this course you will develop your technique, skills and knowledge to gain further understanding in shampoo and hair condition, consultations, styling and finishing technique, cutting, perms and hair colouring.
The City College Hair department benefits from having its own, professional salon that is open to the public and staffed by students. You will gain valuable experience of working professionally, which will stand you in excellent stead when you apply for jobs
Successful completion of the course will enable students to work in salons, hotels, and cruise liners.

Course content:
On the NVQ Level 2 you will learn:
  • How to give effective consultations
  • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Styling and finishing techniques
  • Cutting hair
  • Perm and neutralise hair
  • Colour hair
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work


Facilities for students:
Students will be based at Pelham Tower Campus where we have excellent facilities for practical and theory work. These are:
  • Two well equipped and recently modernised Hair Salons and Reception facilities


Tutors:
The Hair Department is managed by Rachel Turner, an experienced Hairstylist and former salon owner.
The Hair department is staffed by experienced, creative and enthusiastic tutors who have excellent links with the Hairdressing industry and local employers in the area.

Assessment: You will be assessed by:
  • Practical assessments
  • Portfolio
  • Assignments
  • Written papers
  • Oral questioning.

The course is approximately three quarters practical, and one quarter theory.

Awarding Body: VTCT

Entry Requirements:
An NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing. This qualification can be studied at City College Brighton and Hove.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
S/NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing by Leah Palmer and Nicci Palmer

Progression and links:
You may wish to apply onto the NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing.
Following this course you will be able to confidently apply for operator roles within the industry, such as stylist within a salon and further progression to Senior Stylist, Manager and Salon Owner

Work experience opportunities:
Students are encouraged to take up part-time employment in local Hair Salons. There is also the opportunity to work in the Colleges professional salon.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
