No formal qualifications however students need to be at least 16 years old on the 1st of September prior to entry. Practical experience of working in a pet shop or handling a range of animals is an advantage.

Course Content
This part time course is delivered one afternoon a week from September to June. The qualification is suitable for candidates established in the industry and / or sufficiently advanced to study for a Level 3 qualification. Study includes the theory of the management of a variety of species including small mammals, reptiles, amphibians,fish, birds, cats and dogs. This vocationally related qualification has been designed by the Pet Care Trust and supports government initiatives towards the National Qualifications Framework. Assessment is by an externally set three hour examination at the end of the course. No formal entry requirements are needed but candidates should have a sufficient level of literacy and numeracy to enable success in the examination.
Course Features
The City and Guilds Pet Shop Management Certificate is a nationally recognised vocational qualification within the industry and in some areas is a condition of the issuing of a Pet Shop Licence by the Local Authority.
The course of study will include the identification and biological details of a variety of species, species specific husbandry requirements and equipment and accessories required for the wellbeing of different species within the range~ small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, ornamental fish, birds, dogs and cats.
Biological data studied for the range of species will include gestation periods, birth weights, litter numbers, weaning age (for mammals), breeding life, life expectancy etc. Husbandry techniques studied includes the study of the feeding, housing, cleaning, handling, sexing, health and welfare of all species.
Study will include: Husbandry techniques, housing design and equipment, animal welfare and health management for a range of speceis.
Career Prospects and Progression
Some Local Authorities now require a member of staff to be in possession of this qualification before granting a Pet Shop Licence. Many pet shop proprietors now prefer their staff to have gained or be prepared to undertake this qualification. Keep one step ahead and get your certification. Progression to the full time Advanced National Certificate/Diploma in Animal Management or to part time HNC/D Animal Studies is an option that students may wish to consider.
