Introduction to Makaton

About the course:
Makaton is suitable for family members, carers and workers who need to use simple communication techniques at home or work. Makaton was developed in the 1970's to help people with learning disability to communicate. It is now widely used with a variety of children and adults with communication difficulties. Talking does not just involve speaking. Watch someone talking, they will not just be saying words but they will also be using hand movements or gestures, facial expression, eye contact and body language (posture and movement) all this is communication. Makaton uses speech and gesture, facial expression, eye contact and body language. It is a language programme which is based on a selected list of everyday words, such as Daddy, Door, Fall and In.

Course Content:
An introductory course for parents, carers, support workers and professionals who need to use Makaton. Signing instruction is given for Stages 1-4 plus the Additional Stage of the Makaton Core Vocabulary to help in practical situations. Makaton symbols are included and examples of their use are given. Teaching methods are discussed and developed.

Learning Style:
By demonstration /participation and discussion. It is important for you to understand that you are learning a new form of communication. Communication is a two way process, and therefore you will be expected to be involved with all aspects of the course.

Equipment Requirements:
Students will be expected to provide their own writing equipment.
