About this course

The CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing is similar in level to an Honours degree. Therefore, in order to be considered for entry to this course you will need to hold one of the following: Bachelor or Masters degree (from a provider which is formally recognised by the appropriate official body and by the CIM) CIM Certificate in Marketing/CIM Certificate in Marketing Management Practice/CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing/CAM Diploma in Marketing Communications Edexcel (BTEC) Higher National Certificate /Diploma in any subject (UK only) NVQ or SVQ Level 3 in Marketing (UK only) NVQ or SVQ Level 4 in any other subject (UK only) Any appropriate vocational qualification approved by CIM Applicants with suitable work experience in a marketing management role will also be considered. Note: Entry level is dependent upon the currency and relevance of your qualifications and experience. If English is not your first language, you will also need to provide evidence of at least IELTS 6.5 proficiency or Trinity ISE III/IV.

This course leads to Module 1 of the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing: Marketing Planning Process. The Professional Diploma in Marketing is ideal for marketers who are concerned with managing the marketing process at an operational level, as well as those who are looking to build on the knowledge gained at Professional Certificate level with a future marketing management role in mind. The content of the qualification has been put together following consultation with employers to ensure that they gain relevant competencies for various stages of their marketing career. The focus moves from the theoretical aspects of marketing towards the many skills needed to manage the function itself including elements ranging from channel management to communications, along with specialist areas like new product development. Students will learn how to plan, implement and measure marketing activities at the operational level, and understand the impact of marketing decisions on other functions within the business. The typical profiles of people who might take this qualification could include:

On completion of the full qualification (i.e. all four modules) you should be able to:

  • Manage and utilise marketing research and information, plan activity and measure the results

  • Understand marketing communications in depth and how all parts of the promotional mix - from brand to digital - work together
  • Effectively manage marketing activities, including project planning and control, and know how marketing integrates with other functions



Course Content:
By the end of Module 1 of the Professional Diploma in Marketing you should be able to:

  • Explain the role of the marketing plan within the context of the organisation
  • 's strategy and culture and the broader marketing environment (ethics, social responsibility, legal frameworks, sustainability)
  • Conduct a marketing audit considering appropriate internal and external factors
  • Develop marketing objectives and plans at an operational level appropriate to the internal and external environment
  • Develop the role of branding and positioning within the marketing plan
  • Integrate marketing mix tools to achieve effective implementation of plans
  • Select an appropriate co-ordinated marketing mix incorporating appropriate stakeholder relationships for a particular marketing context
  • Set and justify budgets for marketing plans and mix decisions
  • Define and use appropriate measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing plans and activities
  • Make recommendations for changes and innovations to marketing processes based on an understanding of the organisational context and an evaluation of past marketing activities

Further information regarding all CIM qualifications, including this course, can be found at Students should allow for the following additional costs: CIM module assessment fee: 55 (examination method) or 70 (assignment method) payable direct to CIM. This is the assessment fee for the 2008/9 academic year and is liable to change for future years. CIM membership fee: 160 (payable direct to CIM). Text-books and the CIM recommended reading list will be suggested by your lecturer at the start of the course.

Entry Process:
An interview with the course leader will be arranged at the earliest opportunity after receiving your application.

Assessment:
You can choose to be assessed in one of two ways: 1. A standard examination 2. An assignment that brings together various elements of the syllabus and asks you to write a report based on various findings and recommendations within your own company.

Progression Routes:
Successful completion of the full Professional Diploma in Marketing qualification can lead to entry to the CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.

Career Options:
Possible job roles following completion of the Professional Diploma could be Assistant Marketing Manager, Product Executive, Marketing Officer or Marketing Executive.
