About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C including Music. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Course Content

Students will be encouraged to take an active role in music-making at various levels from composing and arranging music, directing ensembles and in organising their own musical activities. Practical work will be backed up by theoretical study and analysis.

Course Features

Performance on an instrument or voice. Solo and/or ensemble.

Two contrasting compositions.

Understanding musical styles, harmony and instrumentation.

A study of a variety of set works which include areas of orchestral music, vocal music,chamber music,musical theatre, jazz rock and pop and Welsh songs.

Additional areas for full A level include Specialist Options of either performing,composing or appraising.
Career Prospects and Progression

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas. The study of music can lead to opportunities in a variety of areas such as the Performing Arts, Media, including recording work, Music Therapy, Teaching, Arts Centre and Concert Hall Management, Music Librarianship, Composing and Music Journalism.

AS and A Level Performance- externally assessed by visiting examiner. Composition - Teacher assessed and externally moderated. Appraising - (listening examination in two parts) - externally assessed.
