About this course
Candidates should be at least 16 years of age and have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy necessary to comply with the Health and Safety aspects of the qualification and the completion of the evidence requirements. Evidence of experience and/or knowledge in substance misuse would be an advantage.

Suitable For
This qualification is appropriate for the widest possible range of candidates, from the general public through to those working with substance users, who wish to gain a broad and objective understanding of the causes and consequences of substance misuse. More specifically, this qualification will be of great interest to those working or volunteering in a variety of fields who may come into contact with those involved in, or affected by, substance use. It is therefore useful to those who need general background knowledge or as a progression route for those who wish to work in a more specialised substance use role.
Course Content
The aim of this course is to:
- Understanding drug use/misuse
- Recognise and respond to drug use/misuse
- Communication with young people about drugs
- Work with communities
- Solvents and volatile substance abuse
- Awareness of issues concerning alcohol and young people
- Blood borne infections related to drug use use/misuse
Students will attend sessions, workshops, tutorials and tutor led lecturers for 3 hours per week. Students are expected to complete a further 5 hours home study per week.
Method of Assessment
Each candidate is required to attend a pre-course interview. They will create a portfolio of evidence, which demonstrates the achievement of all the learning outcomes associated with each unit.
Progression
There is presently no higher level specific drug courses on which to progress though this may be a possibility within the near future.
This course may provide progression onto other courses including Counselling courses, Bereavement & Loss, Mental Health Care, Community Work, and NVQ in Youth Work.
The course is useful for people wishing to enter in to careers involving Counselling, Community, Probation, Policing, Housing Providers, Nursing, Youth and Social Work.
For professionals this course provides specialist knowledge of drug use issues and supports continuous professional development
