Course Overview A range of crafts are offered on this course, including dressmaking, patchwork and quilting, crochet, tapestry, cross stitch, cushion covers and curtain making. Beginners and learners with some prior knowledge are welcome each term. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: basic sewing kit: pins, needles, tape measure, dressmakers shears, notebook and pen. Suitable pattern and materials for chosen project.
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: The aim of this course is that by the end of each chosen project the learners will have acquired the relevant needlecraft techniques and processes to complete a well finished garment or fabric article which is fit for purpose. The course will offer the following crafts to learners: - Dressmaking- fabric construction, suitability of fabric for garment, using a commercial pattern, pattern lays, matching checks, cutting, transferring pattern markings to fabric, assembling garment for fitting, fitting, finishing seams, darts, tucks and pleats, zip insertion, pockets, waistband/facing, setting in sleeves, interfacing, attaching collars and cuffs, facings, buttonholes, using a sewing machine and pressing.The relevant skills and techniques will be taught if the learner chooses one of the following craft subjects: - Patchwork and quilting - Crochet - Canvas work (Tapestry) - Bag making - Cross stitch - Cushion covers - Curtain making - Roman blind making
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be assessed through peer feedback, lecturer feedback, photographs and observation.
Progression: Learners will progress from simple garments to more advanced projects or they can go on to learn any of the crafts offered. Examination courses will be suggested as a progression route with a view to employment.
Homework: Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from continuing work on their project at home.
Additional Costs: There are no additional costs on this course.
