Course Description
These courses are designed to prepare individuals for the role of translator/interpreter and are a progression qualification to prepare for taking a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI).
Each qualification level has 6 credits and 60 hours of study, (3 credits and 30 hours per unit), therefore learners would be expected to attend one two hour contact session per week for each level of study and to carry out independent study for a further 30 hours.
The course runs for 15 weeks plus induction and there are start dates planned for September and January. This is a full cost course
Course Structure
Level Two Translation and Professional Interaction
A programme to equip learners with the ability to:
- Define translation
- Describe the skills required to do translation
- Produce brief translations from English into a community language, e.g. small poster
- Produce brief translation from a community language into English, e.g. small poster
- Describe the importance of research and development to produce an effective glossary
- Produce a glossary / word bank for effective translation / interpretation
A programme to equip learners with the ability to:
- Define interpretation
- Describe the Good Practice Framework
- Describe an effective communication process and barriers to communication
- Describe briefly the common types of interpretation used in UK within community settings
- Describe briefly the skills required for community interpretation in a one to one situation
- Describe the users of interpreters
A programme to equip learners with the ability to:
- Define translation and state the importance of written records for statutory sector
- service providers
- Analyse the skills required to do accurate translation
- Produce the translation of three documents from advanced English into a community
- language, e.g. leaflet, poster and another piece of the learner†s own choice
- Produce the translation of three documents from a community language into advanced
- English, e.g. leaflet, poster and another piece of the learner†s own choice
- Analyse the importance of research and developing a personal glossary
- Produce a research document using advanced English
- Produce a personal glossary of advanced vocabulary and jargon (500 words+ )
A programme to equip learners with the ability to:
- Define interpretation and the three way process
- Analyse the Good Practice Framework and develop their own Code of Practice
- Analyse the communication process and barriers to communication
- Analyse the reasons for communication breakdown
- Explain the common types of interpretation used in the UK within community settings
- Describe the skills required to undertake community interpretation in a one to one
- situation, including the use of jargon and advanced English.
- Describe the users of interpretation, i.e. Public and Voluntary Bodies
- Analyse one of the Public Sector Organisations using interpreters
All learners will need to complete application and interview prior to enrolling. The Level 2 qualification is aimed at those learners with a level two competency in second language skills alongside a native community language. The level 3 qualification is aimed at those learners with a level three competency in second language skills alongside a native community language and/or have completed a level 2 qualification.
Course Progression
These qualifications encourage progression through the levels. A learner completing level 2 can progress to the NOCN Level 3 Translation and Interpretation qualification, where the achievement of the remaining two communication units leads to completion of the full Certificate in Language Skills. Learners who have completed level 3 may wish to progress to a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (subject to availability).
