Course Overview City and Guilds NVQ 3 in supporting teaching and learning in schools NVQ3 This is a ten unit work based qualification for teaching assistants who work with teachers in classrooms supporting the learning process. Suitable for teaching assistants in Primary, Secondary and special schools. This includes those with special responsibilities for a pupil, subject area or age group.

Qualification gained: City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 in supporting teaching and learning in schools.

Course Content: 6 mandatory units - Help to keep children safe. Support pupils' learning activities. Promote positive behaviour. Develop and promote positive relationships. Support the development and effectiveness of work teams. Reflect on and develop practice. 4 other units need to be completed taken from the following optional groups: Supporting pupils' learning. Meeting additional support needs. Providing pastoral care. Supporting the wider work of the school. Working with colleagues.

Work Experience: Must be working as a teaching assistant to be able to gather all the evidence necessary to show competence over a wide range of skills

Course Assessment: Assignments and knowledge base questions, observations and a professional development journal. 2 externally set and marked assignments.

Progression: Foundation Degree in Supporting Childhood Development and Learning - leading on to BEd with Reading University (QTS in Primary) Level 4 Certificate for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties

Homework: 180 hours approximately.

A Handbook for Learning Support Assistants by Glenys Fox, Supporting Literacy and Numeracy by Glenys Fox and Marion Halliwell, Supporting Learning in Primary Schools by Rosemary Sage, An Introduction to Child Development by G.C.Davenport.
