Outdoor Learning
This six week course is designed for practitioners working in an early years or general educational setting. This course may also be of interest to people looking to return to education or those that wish to develop further insight into an interesting and innovative form of delivery to young children.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be entitled to twenty credits from the University of Hull that they can use towards a related higher education qualification if they wish to.
Course content
This course will increase awareness of outdoor learning and the important role it plays in the holistic development of young children. It will combine a series of indoor sessions covering the background and philosophy of Forest Schools with a programme of practical outdoor sessions in a woodland environment. This includes the benefits of outdoor learning and will particularly consider emotional development, connection with nature, physical activity and the benefits of fresh air as well as looking at the creative and imaginative development of young children through the use of outdoor skills which include: safe use of tools, woodland crafts, shelter building, lighting fires and cooking.
By completing this programme you will gain:
- an increased knowledge of the benefits of learning in an outdoor environment.
- An appreciation of the variety of outdoor activities which could facilitate the learning of young children in a woodland environment.
- a range of skills suitable for use in the Forest School.
- an appreciation of different learning styles with relevance to children†s development.
Students will receive a certificate of achievement from the Centre for Professional Studies at University Centre Doncaster and, if they wish to, twenty credits from the University of Hull which could be used towards a related higher education qualification in the future.
Entry Requirements
This course is open to all interested parties with no formal academic qualifications required.
