Course aims:
If you have a basic level of sewing skill and an interest in making garments or tried to change patterns or garments, yet feel you want more experience and want to know how to make garments properly or draft your own pattern, this is the course for you.
The course aims to show you how to draft a basic pattern and how this pattern can be adapted to your own design which will then be made into a final assessment garment to a basic level of skill.

Course content:
On this course you will learn about:
  • producing a simple basic pattern
  • adapting a pattern into different styles
  • sewing techniques including darts, seams, hems, zips, pockets, waistbands, facings and garment construction techniques
  • constructing garments more confidently
  • designing your final assessment garment.


Facilities for students:
Sewing machines, pattern cutting studio, professional pattern Cutting tables, use of the college library (Learning Resource Centre).

Tutors:
Course Tutor, Phil Bint, also teaches Fashion and pattern cutting on the BTEC Foundation Diploma at City College.
He is an experienced pattern cutter and has an in depth knowledge of pattern cutting and garment construction techniques. He has produced work for local theatre, designing and making garments for productions. Phil also exhibits in the Brighton Festival in the Open Houses.

Assessment: Course work will be assessed on a weekly basis and will also be assessed at the end of the course by an external examiner.

Entry Requirements:
An interest in fashion and design is required as well as evidence that you have basic sewing skills and have sewn recently. Commitment and enthusiasm are also essential.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Progression and links:
Students who have completed Pattern Cutting Level 1 can progress onto Level 2 of the course at City College.
The course alone will not guarantee progression into higher education, but the qualification will aid students wanting to apply to for HE or pattern cutting related jobs.
A previous student was given a job as a trainer for a local computer aided design company, Vetigraph, which specialises in supplying a CAD/CAM pattern cutting system for garment manufacturers and Fashion colleges in Britain.
Former students have gone onto various forms of employment for Reiss, London, Vetigraph, a pattern cutting technician and freelance work.

Work experience opportunities:
As a result of attending the NCFE Pattern Cutting Course two previous students have had work experience with Gresham Blake, a former student of City College who now owns a very successful bespoke tailor business in Brighton. The students organised their own work experience.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 149

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
