They must also possess a GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) in English, or have a willingness to take a Level 2 qualification in Literacy. Acceptance for the course is at the professional discretion of the Colleges Education Team.

It confers a threshold licence to teach. It has been a legal requirement since 2007 that all those new to the sector must complete this qualification within their first year of service. It is also aimed at candidates who would like, or who require, an introduction to teaching in the sector, or who are seeking career progression within their area of work, or who may not currently be teaching. Typical candidates will include those who work or wish to work as teachers in the lifelong learning sector, i.e. Further Education (FE), Adult and Community, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified and/or experienced in the subject they intend to teach at level 3 or above. It is also suitable for technicians and support staff in the areas of FE and Adult and Community, as well as training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector and the uniformed services or HM Forces.

The PTLLS Award is one unit, comprising five sections based on the teaching/training cycle. Following successful completion of this course, you will:

Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be aged 19 years or over, and qualified and/or experienced in the subject they wish to teach. Assessment:
Students will be assessed on the basis of two assignments, one theory and one practical, which are made up of smaller assessment tasks. There is also a micro-teaching element.
Progression Routes:
Students successfully completing this Award can progress to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) if they are employed in an Associate Teacher role or the Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) / Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (DTLLS) if they fulfil the Full Teacher role. Both of these qualifications require students to have teaching practice hours in place.

The PTLLS qualification provides a stepping stone into teaching in the lifelong learning (post-compulsory education) sector.
