Preparing To Teach In Lifelong Sector Award
This qualification is suitable for people who are seeking to teach in the lifelong learning sector (post-compulsory education), or those who have recently been appointed to their first teaching role in the sector. It confers a threshold licence to teach. It has been a legal requirement since 2007 that all those new to the sector must complete this qualification within their first year of service. It is also aimed at candidates who would like, or who require, an introduction to teaching in the sector, or who are seeking career progression within their area of work, or who may not currently be teaching. Typical candidates will include those who work or wish to work as teachers in the lifelong learning sector, i.e. Further Education (FE), Adult and Community, work-based learning and the voluntary sector, provided they are qualified and/or experienced in the subject they intend to teach at level 3 or above. It is also suitable for technicians and support staff in the areas of FE and Adult and Community, as well as training personnel in commerce, industry, the public sector and the uniformed services or HM Forces.

Course Content:
The PTLLS Award is one unit, comprising five sections based on the teaching/training cycle. Following successful completion of this course, you will:
  • Understand your own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in specialist area
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
  • Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record upkeep
  • PTLLS is a hands-on qualification, and will not only introduce you to the basic theories of teaching, but develop your core presentation and practical skills; building your confidence in teaching small and large groups of learners.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants must be aged 19 years or over, and qualified and/or experienced in the subject they wish to teach.     Assessment:
    Students will be assessed on the basis of two assignments, one theory and one practical, which are made up of smaller assessment tasks. There is also a micro-teaching element.

    Progression Routes:
    Students successfully completing this Award can progress to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) if they are employed in an Associate Teacher role or the Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) / Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (DTLLS) if they fulfil the Full Teacher role. Both of these qualifications require students to have teaching practice hours in place.

    Career Options:
    The PTLLS qualification provides a stepping stone into teaching in the lifelong learning (post-compulsory education) sector.
