Career Prospects and Progression

Carpenters and joiners work for construction companies, local authorities, public organizations and shop fitting companies. Many are self employed and work as sub-contractors. Others specialise in areas such as restoring old buildings or furniture making. There may be opportunities to work abroad on contracts. It is possible for carpenters and joiners to progress to technician level or into a specialised area of work including construction management.

Method of Assessment

Written knowledge questions for individual units. Practical skills tests and an externally multiple choice examination.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required but basic numeracy and communication skills desirable to Intermediate Construction Awards. Applicants should have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage.
