Course aims:
The aim of the course is to provide you with the skills, underpinning knowledge and broad understanding of the diversity and complexity that is the Construction Industry.
You will explore the roles and responsibilities of the people who work in the industry and the possible career progression routes
This course is designed to develop your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of Site Carpentry and Joinery and the Construction Industry in general.
It explores the built environment and the wider issues of sustainability and the impact the Construction Industry has on the environment.
The course comprises of general core units which relate to; Workplace safety, Sustainability, Construction Industry Regulations, Safe working practices and the opportunity to achieve the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme.
Occupational Specific units cover the range of carpentry disciplines i.e. First fix, second fix and structural carcassing activities.
In addition there are theoretical and practical assignments and an online Knowledge exam.

In Addition to the training programme requirements listed above, there are an additional 6 units for the NVQ in Site Carpentry:

• Erect structural carcassing components

Facilities for students:
The workshops are designed to provide the students with a learning environment which simulates the work place.
This enables students to experience, working from platforms on our roofing rig, kitchen fitting, hang doors, floor joisting, stairs etc.
There is also the opportunity to gain skills in bench joinery as part of the workshop programme.
The workshops are fully equipped with up to date power tools and equipment.
Classrooms have smart boards and projectors enabling learner to take advantage of all the latest resources available relating to the Level 2 Diploma qualification and the Construction Industry.

Assessment: 1. Achievement of each practical unit will be by internal assessment as part of the workshop programme. Each knowledge unit has mandatory series of questions; these are externally set and are assessed internally.
2. A practical assignment set by CAA and controlled by the internal assessor will need to be successfully completed before accreditation of the Qualification.
3. In addition an online Knowledge exam covering the core units and occupational units in which a passed must be accredited to achieve the Qualification.
4. External assessment of performance evidence will be carried out in the work place to verify evidence for accreditation of the NVQ

Entry Requirements:
Minimum 3 GCSE grade D or equivalent in English, Maths and one other.
You should currently be working in the Construction industry to study for the NVQ accreditation. If you are not currently working within the construction industry then you should apply for the Site Carpentry CAA Level 2 Diploma (B06541CD).

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
The Carpentry and Joinery level 2 book by Heinemann is recommended but is not essential.

Progression and links:
You can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry.
The level 2 Diploma is designed to provide learners with the underpinning knowledge, skills and confidence required to apply for employment, within the construction industry.

Work experience opportunities:
As this is a Vocational qualification you will need to be working within the Construction Industry and be able to gain evidence of performance and knowledge covering the range of disciplines in Site Carpentry to meet the requirements of the awarding bodies.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 600.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
