About this course

Although there are no formal entry requirements, you should possess a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy. Applicants must be aged 19 or over and be employed in a school in a paid or voluntary capacity supporting pupils from Foundation Stage up to Key Stage 4 for at least 12 hours per week. Acceptance on to the course will be subject to a successful interview with the course tutor.

Supporting Teaching & Learning Level 2 NVQ
Based on the Governments drive to raise the status of teaching assistants, it is becoming increasingly important for teaching assistants to hold formal qualifications relating to their field of work. This fully accredited National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is respected within the education sector, and will ensure that you have the knowledge and the skills to support the learning of children from the ages of 5 16. This award will develop and recognise your abilities as a teaching assistant, and will prove valuable to the teachers you support. The qualification is designed to be suitable for all staff who work with teachers in classrooms supporting the learning process in primary, special and secondary schools, including those in a general support role and those with specific responsibilities for a pupil subject area or age group. You might be a teaching assistant, classroom assistant, learning support assistant or a special needs assistant. The programme is delivered in students workplace. The assessor and candidate will work closely together covering underpinning knowledge, setting targets and action plans, and arranging observations. Students successfully completing the qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

  • Good practice in the workplace
  • Helping with classroom resources and records
  • Involvement with the care and support of pupils
  • Support for learning activities
  • Effective support for your colleagues
  • A good understanding of literacy and numeracy and provide support in the classroom


  • Course Content:
    A portfolio is required to be built up obtaining various forms of evidence to achieve all of the five mandatory units together with any two optional units

    Mandatory Units:

    • Provide support for the learning activities
    • Support childrens development
    • Help keep children safe
    • Contribute to positive relationships
    • Provide effective support for your colleagues



    Optional Units:
    Students select three units from the following:

    • 005 Support literacy and numeracy activities in the classroom
    • 006 Contribute to the management of pupil behaviour
    • 015 Support the maintenance of pupil safety and security
    • 016 Contribute to the health and well-being of the pupils
    • 022 Support the use of ICT in the classroom

    Entry Requirements:

    Entry Process:
    An interview with the course tutor will be arranged at the earliest opportunity after receiving your application.

    Assessment:
    Students will be assessed on competence of performance and knowledge. You will be expected to develop a portfolio of evidence, including action plans, and personal accounts, and will be observed by your assessor in the workplace.

    Progression Routes:
    Candidates can progress to the Teaching Assistants NVQ Level 3 programme if their work role allows them to perform tasks that demonstrate competence at Level 3.
