Course aims:
The PGCE/Certificate Post-Compulsory Education is a two year course designed to provide a teaching qualification appropriate to the post-compulsory sector. They are mapped against the new Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) Standards for Teachers, Trainers and Tutors in the Lifelong Learning (Post-compulsory) Sector. The qualification is equivalent to the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) at three different levels; level 5 (Cert Ed), level 6 (Professional Graduate Cert Ed) or level 7 (Postgraduate Cert Ed).
Incorporating PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, CTLLS (Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) and DTLLS (Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector).
It is also possible to complete the first two modules of Year 1 and exit the course with the CTLLS qualification. In addition the College also offers a separate PTLLS (Level 3).
This is the general accepted qualification for teachers in post compulsory education and is certificated by the University of Brighton. The course is designed to assist trainee teachers already working in the sector to enhance their skills of learning and teaching through practical application in the classroom, through reflection on practice and through academic study.
Trainees are often based in a College of Further Education or Sixth Form College, but may be working in other organisations such as private training companies, or the National Health, or Uniformed Services.
Course content:
The programme is delivered through seven modules over two years that reflect the key areas identified within the new standards. These are:
Year One
- Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- Planning and Enabling Learning in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- Theories and Principles for Planning and Enabling Learning
- Enabling Learning and Assessment
Year Two
- Curriculum Design for Inclusive Practice
- Action Learning for Subject Specialist Pedagogy
- Professional Development and Wider Professional Practice
Facilities for students:
Learners on these courses are enrolled at University of Brighton and at City College Brighton and Hove and therefore have access to facilities that both institutions provide for learners e.g. libraries.
You will also benefit from the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which aims to support learning outside of face to face sessions.

- Teaching practice portfolio
- Various forms of written work: review, essay, reflection
- Action research project (year 2)

Work experience opportunities:
As an in-service qualification there is a total of 150 hours teaching required over the 2 years.
A Minimum of 50 hours must be completed in year 1.
Qualification in Context and Future Opportunities: Progression to HE: successful applicants on the Cert Ed have the option of transferring to the part time BA (Hons) Professional Education Studies at the end of their course of study.
This is an in-service qualification, although if you found a placement in order to study on this course, the qualification and experience gained would clearly help with securing employment.
