The course is delivered part time over six terms (2 years).
This Diploma comprises seven mandatory units and two optional units totalling 120 credits on the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Preparing to Teach in the LifeLong Learning Sector (PTLLS) counts as six credits and is part of your first manadatory unit.

You must have completed and passed all of Part One before you can progress to Part Two

Final award
City & Guilds Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector 7305
How will I be assessed?
Unit 2 is assessed through both theory and practical assessments and may be achieved at either level 3 or 4 depending on how well the assignments meet the grading criteria. The remaining units are all assessed by tasks which are internally marked by the centre and then externally verified. All the remaining units for Part One are assessed at level 4 and all units in Part Two are assessed at level 5. All assessments are graded as either pass or refer.
You will be required to keep a reflective learning journal from the commencement of the programme, to be completed after each session attended throughout the DTLLS programme. You will also be expected to complete this form after each assessment.
You will be required to have access to and undertake 150 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the course with a minimum of 8 hour long observations by members of the teaching team. You will be required to keep a teaching practice portfolio which includes a log of hours and evidence relating to learners, session planning, delivery and evaluation.
You will be expected to make, and keep, deadlines for the completion of the award.

Applicants need to be currently teaching or training in any of the following settings on either a paid or voluntary basis: Further Education, adult or community education, training for HM service personnel or fire or police personnel, or other training context.
What if I already have a teaching qualification? Will I be exempted?

Please refer to the tariff of legacy qualifications at: You will need to provide original copies of any relevant certificates for these exemptions to be confirmed with the awarding body. There will be no reduction in fees for any units for which exemptions are held.

Career steps

Additional information
How much additional work will be required?
This varies. You should expect to study, in addition to weekly contact time, at least the same amount in your own time. There are no set texts to read, but a wide range of materials, including internet studies, are expected to be researched and referenced.
What about the Minimum Core?
Embedded within the new teacher training qualifications is the need for all teachers to be able to support their students to develop their skills in literacy, language, numeracy and ICT. Therefore, every candidate will have the opportunity to be initially assessed in terms of their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills at the start of the course. You must have English/literacy skills at least at level 2 (English GCSE grades A*-C; Certificate in Adult Literacy Level 2 or equivalent) in order to undertake this qualification. If your numeracy or ICT skills are not at level 2 you will be advised on different routes for support and how to gain qualifications in these areas at an appropriate level.
How can I gain funding for this qualification?
Most students starting this course in 2009-2010 will be able to apply for the new package of support which includes a maintenance grant (part of which is not means-tested) and a fee loan. The amount of support available depends on the period of full-time study or equivalent in the academic year and your personal circumstances.
