Teaching ESOL Level 5 Additional Diploma
This course is designed to enhance teachers knowledge of contextual issues concerning the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). It will refine and extend their ability to employ a variety of practical skills and develop their knowledge and skills to a point where they become effective practitioners in a range of known and unpredicted ESOL teaching situations without supervision. It will extend their motivation and inform their strategies for continuing professional development.
Course Content:
The qualification will contribute to the development internationally of ESOL as a mature, qualified and regulated profession and act as a benchmark for employers and others with concern for the quality of teaching of ESOL. The course comprises the following:
- Part 2 : Unit 1 - Language use and the ESOL learner Unit 2 - ESOL classroom practice Unit 3 - Theory and practice
- Part 3 : Planning and assessment for inclusive practice, minimum core for ICT and numeracy There are 60 guided learning hours for part 2 and 20 for part 3.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants must have a Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL qualification and be working in the Lifelong Learning sector with a minimum of 75 hours of teaching during the course.
Entry Process:
Trainees will be selected through a group interview.
Assessment:
The course is assessed by internal and external assessments, observed practice and external moderation. Part 2 requires the completion of eight assignments and 75 hours of teaching practice, four of which being observed lessons. Part 3 requires the completion of one assignment and two hours of observed teaching.
Progression Routes:
This qualification allows you to progress onto the second year of the generic DTLLS course at West Kent College. On completion of this course you could go on to study on a Masters in TESOL or other higher post-graduate courses in related fields. It can also lead to a career in teaching ESOL in the lifelong learning sector in the post-compulsory and adult education sector.
