Course Overview The course is designed primarily to provide a route for continuing professional development for teachers working with learners with specific learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy acquisition. It is appropriate for teachers working within one phase of education - Primary, Secondary or post 16. It may aslo be suitable for other qualified, experienced learning support staff who work directly with learners and can have responsibility for planning and delivering programmes of literacy and numeracy support.

Qualification gained: OCR 3572 Level 5 Certificate for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia)

Course Content: This qualification is designed to enable teachers to identify the individual strengths and weaknesses of their learners and to plan, deliver and evaluate teaching programmes. There are 4 units to be completed 1. Special Educational Needs Policy and context - national and regional legislation and practice, the role of the specialist educator within a multi-professional team 2. Assessing learners with dyslexia - identification of learners with SpLD affecting the development of literacy and numeracy skills, planning and managing assessment sessions, interpreting data and planning teaching programmes to meet individual needs 3. Teaching learners with dyslexia - planning lessons and preparing resources, delivering lessons and learning support to individuals and groups 4. Teaching methods and reflective practice - reviewing learners' progress and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching

Work Experience: Candidates must be in work placements that meet the requirements of the course. This will involve having complete responsibility for assessing learners, planning a teaching programme and the delivery of the programme.

Course Assessment: Unit 1 is assessed by completion of an assignment set by the OCR. Units 2, 3, and 4 are internally assessed and verified by the centre. Most evidence is gathered from the teaching placements which will be observed and the records of support examined locally.

Progression: OCR level 7 Certificate in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia), OCR level 7 Diploma in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia), Working as a Specialist teacher of learners with SpLDs.

Homework: Learners should expect to spend between 5 and 10 hours per week reading, assessing learners' needs, planning lessons, teaching and evaluating progress.

Additional Costs: Candidates will need to provide the materials for assessing learners and provide resources to support the teaching placements.

These learners will need to be within one phase of education but at different ability or keystage levels. Candidates will be expected to have a high level of skill and be working at or above the equivalent of level 3 in the following key skill areas, Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, working with others, improving own learning and problem solving
