Course Overview This course is primarily an upholstery course for learners who want to develop their skills to enable them to become competent to work at home by themselves. The course also covers soft furnishing such as curtains, blinds, lampshade making and cushions. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: piece of furniture e.g. dining chair, footstool. Pincers, mallet, hammer, scissors
Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a formal qualification.
Course Content: The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the basic principles of upholstery and how to apply them to their own piece of furniture. Each learner will be working on their own piece of furniture. They will become familiar with the methods and the order of work required to successfully strip down and re-upholster a piece of furniture. They will understand how to use and attach all the materials required at each stage of upholstering the piece. Learners will acquire the skills necessary to be able to upholster traditional and modern upholstery, while also learning how to safely use all the necessary tools of the trade in their work. Due to the diverse range of projects covered by those attending this course, learners will experience upholstery techniques wider than their own project by observing others in the class. Guidence and advice personal to their projects will be offered to the learners on an individual basis.
Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.
Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be assessed through lecturer feedback, observation and presentation.
Progression: Learners can progress to City and Guilds upholstery course.
Homework: Homework is not essential but learners will benefit from undertaking home study (practising techniques learnt, working on their piece) of approximately 1- 2 hours per week
Additional Costs: Materials will be bought by learners as and when needed (These are available from the tutor). Books can be recommended by the lecturer at a later date.
