The course covers the following topics: 1.Equipment Construction 2.Inspection 3.Combined Inspection and Testing 4.The Use of Instruments and Recording Data 5.Equipment Assessment is by a one-hour online multiple choice exam consisting of 30 questions relating to the 5 subject areas covered during the course. Each of the subject areas carries a weighting of 20% towards the overall mark. Suitable for: This course is aimed at those who undertake the practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment and wish to gain a qualification to demonstrate their competence to carry out Portable Appliance Testing.

It is strongly recommended that candidates entering the C&G 2377-12 have a basic understanding of electrical principles and should be familiar with electrical systems and hazards of electricity.

The course covers the following topics:
1. Equipment Construction – Types of equipment, classification marks and form of construction; electric shock due to lack of, or inadequate, protection; protection against electric shock; RCD protection; effects of flexible leads and cord sets’ resistance on disconnection times
2. Inspection – Initial frequencies for user checks and visual/combined inspections; items that can be inspected; carrying out visual inspections
3. Combined Inspection and Testing – Conducting visual inspection/examination of equipment; the purpose of different types of test; types of instrument that can be used to test electrical equipment
4. The Use of Instruments and Recording Data – Minimum and maximum conductor and insulation resistances; ‘leakage’ and ‘touch’ currents; identification label information; interpreting test results to recognise deteriorating information
5. Equipment – Requirements for procedures to deal with damaged and faulty equipment; testing procedures for microwaves; considerations for IT equipment; requirements for appliance flexible cables; tests required following equipment repair
