You will learn how to take accurate body measurements and use them to draft basic garment blocks: skirt, trousers, bodice and sleeve. You will make and fit a toile (fitting shell) for fitting perfection.

These blocks are the basis of most garment styles. You will also learn how to manipulate your blocks into basic styles. Some dressmaking skills are helpful but not essential. The course cost includes materials.

Jane has worked for many years as a couture designer/maker and has breadth of teaching experience in adult, further and higher education. Are you frustrated with commerical patterns that don't fit or want to make patterns for your own designs? If so this is the course for you.

You will take accurate body measurements and use them to draft basic garment blocks - skirt, trousers, bodice and sleeve. You will make and fit a toile (fitting shell) gaining an understanding of your body shape and size and how this affects fit. You will make and fit a calico toile (fitting shell) for fitting perfection.

You will explore simple pattern manipulation techniques to adapt your blocks into stylish garments.

If you struggle to get a good fit from commercial patterns, drafting a basic garment block cut to your measurements could well be the answer.

The bodice block is the basis for wide range of garments for example blouse, dress, fitted jacket and waistcoat and can be drafted up into a jacket and coat block.

On this two day pattern cutting bodice block course you will learn how to take accurate body measurements and how these and your body shape affect fit. You will then draft your measurements into a bodice and sleeve block.

Make and fit a toile (fitting shell) adjusting as required discovering your body shape and fitting needs. Achieve the basis of a fantastic fit.

Draft a sleeve block and explore how to adjust the sleeve head to fit.



Additional information

This course is an ideal introduction to making your own garment patterns. It introduces the basic concepts and covers body shape, size and fitting problems. You can use the skills gained on this course to make patterns for yourself or to enhance your work as a designer/maker. This course would be a useful introduction or refresher course for fashion and costume students.
