Number patterns pervade the way plants grow – how leaves are arranged, the number of petals, spirals in seed heads, and so on. Come and discover these fascinating and little known aspects of plant life. There will be some enjoyable practical activities. No mathematical knowledge required.
Lucy has had a long association with the Open University, both as a lecturer and as a Staff Tutor, managing the mathematics lecturers in the South West. She also spent many years teaching in Further Education where her interest in the way mathematics relates to so many aspects of our lives began. There she had the opportunity to teach ‘Access’ students where the classes were not bound by any syllabus. Her classes are lively and her enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. She has dispelled the mystique of mathematics for many adult students who thought it was difficult. As well as continuing to work for the OU, Lucy is now a freelance teacher offering courses in the way mathematics relates to nature (Fibonacci Series), art and architecture (Golden Section), composition in art (music tuning and volume) as well as projective geometry.
