1. Perform an holistic subjective and objective continence assessment. 2. Perform an ultrasound bladder scan to check for residual volumes of urine. 3. Recognize relevant pelvic floor pathology. 4. Perform a pelvic floor muscle assessment and devise a pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation programme. 5. Effectively use biofeedback and muscle stimulation as treatment tools. 6. Understand the role of medication and lifestyle changes in improving continence status. 7. Have an understanding of national standards and NICE guidelines relating to urinary incontinence in women. Suitable for female continence nurse advisors and physiotherapists who wish to develop skills in assessment of the pelvic floor and the confidence to use treatment options of biofeedback, muscle stimulation and pelvic floor muscle exercises for rehabilitation.

Joanne has worked in the speciality of continence for 9 years, in which time she has worked at Huddersfield and Tameside. She has worked in her present role since May 2005. Joanne a special interest in promoting continence, the neurological bladder and pelvic floor rehabilitation. Course programme
This intensive 2 day programme will enable the 8 participants to:
- Perform a holistic continence and pelvic floor muscle assessment
- Devise a treatment plan in line with NICE guidelines
- Develop practical skills and understand the theory of:
- Pelvic floor muscle education
- Biofeedback
- Muscle stimulation
- Bladder scanning
The weekend programme will run on various dates through the year. Course participants will have exclusive access to ongoing long term support through our website.
Course content
1. Anatomy and physiology
2. Subjective continence assessment and bladder scanning
3. Vaginal examination
4. Pelvic floor muscle assessment
5. Treatment options including biofeedback and muscle stimulation
6. Devising and progressing pelvic floor muscle exercise programmes
7. Practical ways to increase patient motivation and compliance
Teaching methods
This course is designed to be of a highly practical nature. Private rooms are used for tutor led practical sessions. Participants are encouraged to opt into the practical sessions in order to gain the maximum benefit from the programme.

A summary of the levels of participation are as follows:
1. Working in pairs and practicing vaginal examinations on each other
2. Practicing on other course members but not being examined by anyone
3. Using vaginal and /or surface electrodes for biofeedback and muscle stimulation
4. Working in pairs to perform external bladder scanning
