The Music and Drama Pathway

What is the course content?
The Performance element of the course involves Music and Drama. You will take part in a series of workshops which will develop your skills in both of these areas. This may involve working with theatre professionals as well as weekly practical workshops from teaching staff. Alongside this you will be required to keep an up to date working log of your development as well as intermittent skills audits and evaluation.

The Production element may include Marketing, Arts Administration, Front of House arrangements, scheduling of rehearsals and resources, stage management, etc.
You will take a role in bringing a production or event into operation by organising and performing in it. You will create an action plan, write a report which evaluates the strengths of the team in organising the event and perform.
In the past students have organised an event for a local primary school and performed some Theatre in Education(TIE) to a secondary school.

In the summer term you will create an original performance from an external commission brief.

First Year (AS Level)
There are three AS units:
  • Exploring Skills for Performance
  • Planning for an Event
  • Performing to a Commission.

Second Year (A Level)
There are three A2 units:
  • Employment Opportunities in the Performing Arts
  • Advanced Performance Practice
  • Production Delivery.

The Dance Pathway

What is the course content?

The Performance element of the course involves developing your skills as a dancer. The course is recommended for students who are keen to develop their practical dance skills in technique, improvisation and choreography. This will involve taking part in a series of workshops and may also include working with dance professionals.
The Production element may include marketing, arts administration, front of house arrangements, scheduling of rehearsals and resources, stage management, etc. You will organise and manage your own event and write up your findings in a report.

The A2 dance units build on the AS and involve creating a professional portfolio and audition piece to demonstrate your skills and understanding of the performing arts industry. You will learn about and research into specific choreographers and their work; developing the skills for planning and rehearsing for a production/performance.

How will your work be assessed? (AS and A Level)

You will be assessed in practical ways and through building a portfolio and although there are no written exams you will be required to write reports, logs and evaluations throughout. You will be assessed by your teacher through a portfolio of work, and on your performance: Your work will then be moderated by a visiting examiner from the exam board.

What are the entry requirements?
The general entry requirements for studying at Advanced level apply. Some previous experience in Music, Drama or Dance is required - although you don't need to have followed an exam course. A readiness and enthusiasm about performing is necessary.

Other information
If you have any health problems which might affect your practical work, you should discuss these with your teacher.
