Performing Engineering Operations - Fabrication and Welding Level 1

What are the Course Details?
The course provides a mixture of practical work in the College's fabrication workshop together with associated classroom work to provide the theoretical knowledge needed to back up the practical element of the course.
Throughout the duration of the course you will learn the basics of fabrication and welding as a lead to a possible apprenticeship or employment.

Is the Course for Me?
This course is designed for learners looking to gain recognised qualifications and employment in the fabrication and welding industry.

What will I Learn?
Applicants must complete five units made up of three mandatory units and two practical units.

Mandatory Units:
  • Working Safely
  • Working Effectively and Efficiently
  • Engineering Communication


Practical Units:
  • MMA Welding
  • Oxy-fuel Gas Cutting


Areas of study will include:
  • Hand Tools
  • Welding Using Various Processes (e.g. Manual Metal Arc, MIG)
  • Using Oxy-fuel Gas Cutting Equipment
  • Health and Safety
  • Establish Effective Working Relationships
  • Appropriate BTEC/City and Guilds Supporting Knowledge Programme

Learners will also study Functional Skills at Level 1 or 2.

How will I Learn?
The course has a high practical content and is delivered in the fabrication/welding and mechanical engineering workshops. The work consists of a series of practical tasks backed up by underpinning knowledge to ensure that the necessary skills are developed.

How will I be Assessed?
Learners' progress is measured by continual assessment with assignments being set to cover each mandatory and practical unit. There will also be assessed practical tasks to complete in the fabrication workshop.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a part of this course although learners will spend significant time in the College workshops.

What can I Progress to?
Upon successful completion of this course learners can progress onto the NVQ 2 PEO Fabrication and Welding course (this course forms the basic requirement for an apprenticeship).

Other Learner's Experiences;
Previous learners have successfully gained employment within the industry and progressed onto higher level qualifications.

What are the Course Details?
The course provides a mixture of practical work in the College's fabrication workshop together with associated classroom work to provide the theoretical knowledge needed to back up the practical element of the course.
As part of this course you will learn intermediate level vertical welding and theory as a lead to a possible apprenticeship or employment.

Is the Course for Me?
This course is designed for learners looking to gain recognised qualifications and employment in the fabrication and welding industry.

What will I Learn?
Applicants must complete six units made up of three mandatory units and three practical units.

Mandatory Units:
  • Working Safely
  • Working Effectively and Efficiently
  • Engineering Communication


Practical Units:
  • M.M.A Welding
  • Oxy-fuel Gas Cutting
  • MIG/MAG Welding


Areas of study will include:
  • Welding Using Various Processes (e.g. Manual Metal Arc, MIG, TIG) and different materials
  • Cutting and Shaping Platework Using Various Processes and Materials
  • Health and Safety
  • Handling Engineering Information
  • Establishing Effective Working Relationships
