The aim of this course is to improve the personal safety of all staff working within and around the Children Center environments. The key aim will be to raise awareness as to the potential for workplace conflict/violence and to give staff the practical tools to manage any such events. Suitable for: This course is aimed at Children Center Staff who are predominately office based but may on occasion work off site. Course programme
Objectives & Course Content
The course content will include:
- The definition of workplace violence as given by The Health & Safety Executive.
- Glynis M Breakwell's Model of Conflict which allows staff to gain a practical understanding of the various levels of personal arousal which occur during the onset of agitation, aggression and/or violence.
- The teaching & exploration of appropriate response options to each stage of the model (Includes Welcoming Diversity, Risk Assessment, De-fusion & Active Listening Skills, Basic
- Self Protection Skills, Post Incident security/Support, De-Brief & Incident Reporting Modules)
- The short & long term physiological effects of working in situations were conflict, aggression and violence can occur.
- The various legislation and guidance which surrounds a person's right to safety and self-defence. (Includes Human Rights Act 1998, Criminal & Common Law, Health & Safety Legislation.) Includes "jury" exercise on real life case law involving use of force.
- Information on the prevaillence of workplace violence and the factors that can impact on increasing or decreasing its likiliehood.
- Both passive & dynamic pressurised training in the physical techniques
- A module on weapon awareness which includes statistics that show the increase in use of bladed weapons as a common form of assault. Case studies involving social workers & support workers who have died as the result of weapon attacks will be included.
- Practical exercise on personal threat assessment & personal risk management planning.
The course is delivered through a mixture of mediums including lecture, groupwork, discussion, personal sudy and practical exercises. All elements of the course will be tailored to the individual needs of Children Centre and instructors will familiarise themselves with Surestarts procedures/policies on health & safety prior to undertaking the course.
If agreeable with Children Centre Managers site visits will be undertaken at a maximum of three sites prior to the courses being facilitated. This is to allow course instructors the opportunity to have a visual understanding of the workplace prior to course delivery and to identify any potential hotspots and preferred routes of evacuation.
