Here at Doncaster College you will be taught by experienced trainers and tutors with over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry. Our highly experienced team include a 2 x World Natural Bodybuilding Champion and a professional Strength & Conditioning Coach who has worked with a range of athletes and sports teams for over 10 years.
Assessment
There are no exams on this course!
Mandatory Units 1- 3 – Current L2 Gym Instructor Certificate required.
Anatomy and Physiology Unit 4 – assessed through e-work booklets.
Personal training and Nutrition Programming Unit 5 and 7- e-work booklets, case study and VIVA.
Practical Assessment x 2 Unit 6 – observed by qualified assessors and fitness professionals – implementing fitness assessments and delivering advanced training programmes.

Course programme
Learners must have achieved the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing before they enrol on this qualification. The qualification aims to provide learners with the understanding and practical skills needed to work as a Personal Trainer in a variety of settings. This includes understanding health and safety in a fitness environment, customer service, anatomy and physiology, personal training programmes and sessions, and nutrition. Learners successfully completing this qualification will be able to gain access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 3.
Core Units: (3 x units from the L2 Fitness instructing Gym)
- Unit 1 Level 2 Know How to Support Clients who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity Exercise
- Unit 2 Level 2 Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
- Unit 3 Level 2 Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
- Unit 4 Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
- Unit 5 Level 3 Programming Personal training with Clients
- Unit 6 Level 3 Delivering Personal Training Sessions
- Unit 7 Level 3 Applying Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme
All candidates must have completed Level 2 Fitness Instructing Gym prior to starting the personal trainer course (units 1-3)
- Unit 4 – Level 3 anatomy and physiology booklet (cardio-respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, postural and core stability, nervous and endocrine systems) – there is no exam
- Unit 5 – How to programme safe and effective advanced exercise and training methods for a range of clients – case study
- Unit 6 – How to deliver advanced exercise and physical activity as part of an individualised programme for apparently healthy adults of all ages – practical assessment
- Unit 7 – How to apply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme and understand the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating- case study
The course is based at The Hub Fitness Centre and will consist of a series of theoretical and practical workshops.
