About this course
This course is specifically designed for candidates who achieved the 'Officer of the Watch' (OOW) Certificate of Competency( COC) by following a 'Merchant Navy Training Board' (MNTB) approved VQ deck cadet training scheme including Phase 7 Chief Mate UPK but are progressing to Chief Mate by the traditional examination route, not the VQ route. It is your responsibility to ensure that all the entry requirements, including entry to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) oral examination, are met prior to attending the course. If in doubt contact the college for advice. The entry requirements include: Completion of all the requirements of Phase 7 of your training including HND assessments. (Chief Mate UPK) Candidate who followed 'A' route cadet scheme must submit the Phase 8 assignment. No less than 18 months sea service as a watchkeeping officer whilst holding the 'Officer of the Watch' COC. Discharge book entries verifying sea service. Sea service testimonials to support all watchkeeping sea service.

Course content:

- Navigation, Radar & ARPA Simulator Training (NaRAST - Management) - integrated within the main course but a separate certificate issued.
- Medical Care Course & Examination.
- Signals - tuition is given and provision for candidates to sit the examination if the previous certificate has expired.
- MCA/SQA external examinations - tuition is given to prepare candidates for examinations in 'Navigation' & 'Stability'.
- MCA Oral examination - tuition is provided within the course for this external examination.

Qualifications achieved:
STCW95 Chief Mate Certificate of Competency and HND in Nautical Science (if not previously awarded).
To support your application to the MCA for a Chief Mate COC you will have to submit the following:
- OOW COC
- Discharge book & sea service testimonials
- Evidence of having passed the HND units - issued by the College
- Evidence of having passed the MCA/SQA external examinations - issued by SQA
- NaRAST - Management Certificate - issued by the College
- Medical Care Certificate - issued by the College
- Valid signals certificate - issued by the College
- Valid GMDSS(GOC) Certificate - issued by the relevant authority
- Valid Medical Fitness Certificate - (ENG 1 - equivalent)
- 2 Photographs (attested)
Progression opportunities:
With further sea service holding the Chief Mate COC, candidates are eligible to enter the MCA oral examination for the Master's COC.
The qualifying sea service to Master is a minimum of 36 months whilst holding an OOW COC including a minimum of 18 months whilst holding a Chief Mates COC.
