About this course

Standard AS/A level entry requirements of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C apply. Previous Art or Photography qualifications would be useful but not essential. All students will need to be interviewed by the course leader at which time students will have to submit a portfolio of their photographs.
Plus a minimum APS Score: 39

Aim This course provides you with advanced training in technical, historical and practical aspects of photography. You will gain knowledge, understanding and the skills needed for a career in photography through the exploration of techniques and the interpretation of still and moving imagery achieved through a lens-based media.

Practical aspects are covered through a variety of assignments, followed by more individualised study as you begin to choose your own specialist areas of interest.

Content During the course you will:
· Show an understanding of how ideas, feeling and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted in images created in the context of your chosen area
· Develop the ability to explore elements of visual language, line, form, tone, pattern and texture in the context of photography
· Develop the techniques related to the developing/printing of photographic images
· Show knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary developments and different styles from early experiments to the present day
· Develop an understanding of the appropriate choice of camera types, film, digital equipment and image manipulation.

Year 1 - AS level
1. A coursework portfolio including a range of practical and written projects
2. An externally set 5 hour assignment.

Year 2 - A level
3. An extended personal study
4. An externally set 15 hour controlled test.

Progression/career opportunities
The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress on to a range of Higher Education programmes or to enter a career in media, marketing or the creative industries.

Extra information
At the start of each year you will have to buy two boxes of photographic paper and films. The approximate cost of this is £50. You will also be expected to take part in two college visits.

It would be an advantage to have your own camera in order to maximise the opportunity to take pictures.
Advice on a suitable model will be given at the beginning of the course.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
