You should have an interest in visual arts and photography and be able to use patience to develop your skills around producing photographic images according to your own ideas. You should be prepared to use SLR or digital cameras a chemical darkroom and computers.

- Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2
- Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2
You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.
What qualification will I receive?
You will receive, upon completing the course, two BTEC Level 2 units in Photography. Both units make up the Level 2 Award.
Where can it lead?
With this Award you can use it with your photographic artwork for application to a higher level BTEC Certificate or Diploma course or for application to our Access to Higher Education courses in Art and Design or Media. You will be able to use the Award and the photographic products produced for it to develop career opportunities.
What will I study?
You will study how the technical functions of the camera can manipulate the quality of the images produced. You will also study how printing techniques, such as BW or Digital can be used to process your images and ideas. You will be introduced to professional practices and the work of other photographers and artists. You may wish to experiment with other subjects such as Photography & the Figure, Landscape, Photojournalism, Fashion, Advertising or Promotions.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through demonstrations, seminars, guidance notes, research and your own experiences, guided and supported by your lecturer.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through assignments where you produce your own work to a set brief from the assessor lecturer. You will be graded a Pass, Merit or Distinction according to the quality of your work. The overall grade will be a culmination of the grades awarded during the course.
What support is available while I am on the course?
Your lecturer will support you with technical processes and there will be active support using equipment and software. You can talk to us in confidence about any issues that may be affecting you so that we can work around them with you, in order to give you the opportunity to gain the qualification. The darkroom and studio have good wheelchair access and we can give reading materials with large type if needed. Our extensive learning resources are available to all students.
