Course programme

This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and photographic skills required for success in current and future employment in the photo-imaging sector, or for progression to the third year of an undergraduate Honours Degree, including BA (Hons) Photography or BA (Hons) Fine Art (Photography) at London Metropolitan University.

You will develop skills using 35mm SLR and DSLR, medium format film and digital cameras, large format cameras, studio photography, studio lighting, professional quality inkjet printing, advanced Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Capture.

You will study:

  • In Year 1: Studio Techniques and Professional Practice; Photographic Techniques and Location; Photography; Digital Imaging; Visual Language; and Historical Context.
  • In Year 2 topics include: Work-based Learning & Exhibition; Critical Studies and Conceptual Practice; Press and Photojournalism; Advertising and Fashion; Multi-media; and Specialist Practice.

You will need 160 UCAS points from one, or a combination of the following:

  • A Levels in related subjects at Grade C
  • BTEC National or Extended Diploma at MPP
  • BTEC Level 3 National Certificate or Diploma at MM
  • Access to Higher Education qualification (subject related) at Pass

In addition:

  • A portfolio of 12 digital photographs
  • A successful interview in person or via Skype
  • 4 GCSEs at Grade C, including Maths or Science, and English
  • Students for which English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of level 6.

Please note, Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2 or Key Skills Application of Number and Communication at Level 2 will be accepted in place of GCSE English and Maths.

Applicants who do not meet the entry criteria will be considered based on equivalent qualifications, previous experience, a College assessment, applicant interview and a portfolio of relevant work.


Assessment is by module coursework, practical project work and written assignments, and communication skills will be assessed through presentations.

On successful completion of the course, you will get a Foundation Degree Art in Photography.

Following on, you can progress to the third year of BA (Hons) Fine Art (Photography) or BA (Hons) Photography at London Metropolitan University. You may also pursue careers such as Commercial Photographer, Photographer's Assistant, Digital Re-toucher, Picture Editor/Researcher, Museum/Gallery Assistant, Advertising Agencies Creative, Community Project Worker, and Technician.
